Fleet Driver Training |
|
The
Government has introduced new legislation, which extends the work place to
include the interior of company vehicles, thus placing a duty of care on
employers to ensure company drivers are adequately trained. With this in mind,
the DSA has put in place a registration scheme for fleet driver trainers. This
scheme is currently voluntary but is soon to become obligatory. Grandfather
Rights were afforded to current trainers who had been training company drivers
over the last few years provided that they registered before a set date. That
date has now expired.
In 1977 the Association of Car Fleet Operators issued a
report that looked at the benefits associated with driver training. There was
one overwhelming conclusion from the report Driver Training
works!!!
With rising costs and continued government focus on
Health and Safety, driver training will become increasingly important as it is
now playing a crucial part in companies risk management strategies. Our
objectives are to improve overall safety of our clients (defensive driving) and
significantly reduce the accident rate within a vehicle fleet.
Driver training is designed to identify areas needing
improvement and develop the trainee into a safer and more aware driver. Part of
the training would focus on attitudes and behavioural patterns, as they are
very important and could lead to potential accidents. Thus developing not only
a persons driving technique, but also improving their attitude towards
driving.
Insurance companies will, in most cases, offer discounts to companies who offer
driver training to their staff. In some cases, they will make training form a
part of the policy, especially where there is a history of claims, or a large
proportion of staff have endorsements. Driver training can also have a positive
effect on vehicle running costs. Fuel savings and maintenance can be easily
measured. Vehicle sympathy saves general wear and tear on tyres, gearboxes,
clutches etc. Stress factors can also be measured, savings can be made with
regards to work related sick leave.
Key Factors
HSE guidelines re training. Fleet managers are now responsible for making sure
that all company drivers are trained. Companies will have to pay large fines
and senior managers could even face imprisonment.
